| A careful reading of Emerson’s journals and letters from the gender perspective brings to life a liberal, tender and loving Emerson who praises women’s special traits, virtues and contributions to human civilization and thus encourages them to pursue equal rights with men. Emerson also prizes true love based on the communion of souls and the loyalty and responsibility in marriage.This reverses his known grim and insipid image of a typical solitary and meditative transcendentalist.Some important women in Emerson’s life shaped his views on women, love and marriage which find adequate expression in his letters and journals. |
