| Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most influential American writers in 19th century. His famous short story Rappaccini’s Daughter is an allegory of a fallen garden with Giovanni and Beatrice as new Adam and Eve. Doctor Rappaccini’s garden is the main locate, which links up with the characters, plots as well as the contents perfectly. Meanwhile, Beatrice is seen as the extension of the garden image and the garden is also the projection of Giovanni’s inner emotions. The garden’s rich implications delineate the theme and reveal Hawthorne’s attitudes towards Puritanism, humanity and racial problems. |
