| As one of the world's foremost scholars of mythologies, Joseph Campbell indicates in his book “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”that some basic, universal truths lie in different manifestations across different cultures, and he further studies and figures out some general myth patterns: separation sufferings transformation. “The Call of the Wild” is among the best works by Jack London. Buck, the hero of the novel, lost his paradise at first. Then, he has experienced many sufferings. At last, he has finished his transformation and returned to his essence. Buck's experiences fully fit Campbell's theory. From the analysis of the prototype of the myth of Buck, we can understand more deeply the mythological connotation of this novel and it will provide a new perspective for the appreciation of this great work. |
